Bird #3 — American Robin

turdus (a thrush) migratorius (wanderer)

Sunday, May 13, 1979 — 11:00 am

Des Plaines, Illinois — home

I was looking out the living room window of my house when I spotted this Robin. It was foraging on the front lawn. (I happen to see a lot of birds when they are “foraging.”) And I didn’t even have to look in my field guide. Good thing, because at this time in my birding career, I had neither field guide or binoculars. I soon remedied this with loans of both items from Dad.

Sally and I had come out on the train from Moody for the day. Mom and Dad were off on a Family Living Seminar and we decided to escape the crush of college. At this point, Sal had no idea how passionate I was going to be about birds. For that matter, neither did I.
