Millennium Park — July 3

My wife and I made a quick trip downtown in the late afternoon to see the Independence Celebration by the Grant Park Orchestra. We met up with our friend who got us reserved seats in the chairs near the stage. Her daughter plays violin in the orchestra.

The concert opened with a reading of the Declaration of Independence by a theater group. This was followed by about an hour of patriotic songs. The conductor, Christopher Bell, was an entertainer. He came out after the intermission dressed in a red, white and blue outfit complete with a cape. Here he is dancing to the Can-Can from Orpheus in the Underworld.

As we were leaving, I noticed the Farmers Insurance airship flying along the lake shore. It is one of only two zeppelins in the world. Unlike a blimp, it has a rigid frame.
