Birds at Fountain Creek

Spent a morning in the Fountain area. Here are the highlights.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet

Female Hooded Merganser

Male Northern Flicker. This one is an intergrade between the eastern Yellow-shafted form and the western Red-shafted form. It has the gray face, brown crown, and yellow mustache stripe of the Red-shafted but the red patch on the nape of the Yellow-shafted. You can’t see it in this photo, but it also had red feather shafts. So, basically it looks like a Red-shafted Flicker but with a red nape patch.

Brown Creeper

I saw 42 species on the day, including five new ones for the year, bringing my 2020 list up to 150 birds—on March 1!
