A bunch of deserters, including Sharpe's nemesis Hakeswill, are holding a border fortress. Sharpe takes a force and captures them but runs into a massive French force on the way to invade Portugal. Sharpe, using new Congreve rockets, manages to hold off the vastly superior force until help arrives, but Hakeswill kills Sharpe's wife, Teresa. he is captured and Sharpe kills him.
