Review - Winchester '73

Lin McAdam and his buddy High Spade ride into Dodge City. Lin is looking for Dutch Henry Brown, the man who killed Lin’s father. Dutch also happens to be Lin’s brother. Lin knows Dutch will show up to participate in the shooting competition to win the special Winchester ’73 rifle. The two are kept from killing each other by Wyatt Earp, but when Lin wins the competition, Dutch jumps him and takes the rifle. Lin follows.

We also follow the history of the rifle. Dutch loses it in a card game with a gun runner who then loses it to the Indian Young Bull who killed and scapled him for it. Young Bull and his tribe attack a small cavalry troop in which Lin and High have taken refuge along with a coward named Steve Miller and Lola, the dance-hall girl he plans to marry. Lin kills Young Bull, but doesn’t realize he has his rifle. He rides off, and Steve gets the rifle. He and Lola meet up with the outlaw gang of Waco, and Waco kills Steve for the rifle and rides off with Lola to meet up with Dutch. The two plan a bank robbery. Lin rides into town just as the robbery starts. He sees Waco with the rifle and takes it from him. Waco is killed in a shootout. Dutch rides out of town, but Lin follows and kills him. He gets his rifle, his revenge and Lola.

Pretty good. Jimmy Stewart is actually convincing as a man with an edge. Some of the situations were pretty corny, but it was pretty exciting throughout.
