Description:French Captain Henri (Cary Grant) is sent on a series of missions after the war with U.S. officer Catherine (Ann Sheridan). They fight and bicker all the time. On their final mission, they also fall in love. That’s when the confusion starts. First they have to get married three times — once by German civil government, once by a U.S. chaplain and once by a French priest. On their wedding night, Catherine receives orders to return to her troop to go home. Henri follows, but they can’t figure out how to get him into the U.S. They finally register him under the war bride act. As Henri follows Catherine across Europe to their ship, they keep running into problems that keep them from spending the night together. Henri can’t sleep with the other war brides or anyone else. He keeps wandering around towns looking for a bed. When they get to the ship, the Navy officer won’t let him aboard as a bride, so Catherine dresses him up as a (really ugly) woman with hair she cuts off a horse’s tail. He’s found out and arrested after the ship sails. Catherine finds an officer and explains everything. Henri is free and finally gets to spend a night with his wife.

Review - I Was a Male War Bride

A silly movie. The first half, when Henri and Catherine are on their mission, bickering and causing each other problems, is basically a slapstick sketch. After they get married, it gets funnier as Henri (with Grant’s comic timing) tries to find a place to sleep and has to repeatedly explain how he’s a bride.
