Davy Crockett (Fess Parker) and George Russel (Buddy Ebsen) want to take a load of furs to New Orleans. When Mike Fink, King of the River, charges them too much money, they decide to hire their own boat and race him to the town. Hijinks ensue. After Crockett's boat wins the race by mere feet. he and Fink become friends. They team up in the second half of the episode to defeat a band of river pirates who masquerade as Indians and waylay passing boats.

Review - Davy Crockett and the River Pirates

Unlike the first movie, this one doesn't pretend to be factual. The opening credit song calls the story a legend. It's more slapstick and fun than the original, and with this one, I can see how a young boy could get hooked on Crockett and his coonskin hat. Crockett's character still has no depth, but Parker does a good job of posing like a hero.
