Description:Louisa May Foster (Shirley MacLaine) wants the simple life, but her mother wants her to marry Leonard Crawley (Dean Martin), the owner of all the businesses in their small town except one. That one is owned by Edgar Hopper (Dick Van Dyke) who pays very little attention to his store and does a lot of fishing. In rebellion, Louisa marries Hopper. Suddenly the store takes off, Hopper becomes a millionaire, Crawley sells out and disappears, and Hopper works himself to death. Louisa inherits his millions and leaves for Paris. She meets starving artist Larry Flint (Paul Newman). Soon, his paintings begin to sell and he becomes fabulously wealthy—until his attempts to create larger and larger works kills him. Louisa inherits his millions and heads back to New York. She meets and millionaire Rod Anderson (Robert Mitchum) and convinces him to quit business and buy a farm. He does, but the farm work kills him. Louisa inherits all his millions. She meets a night club performer, Pinky Benson (Gene Kelly) whose act is pathetic. In a hurry one night, she encourages him to do his act without makeup. Pinky becomes a huge movie star and is trampled to death by adoring fans. Louisa inherits his millions. She tries to give all her money to the IRS, but they send her to a psychiatrist (Robert Cummings). He falls in love with her, but then passes out. The janitor comes in and revives him, and Louisa realizes it's Crawley. They get married and live on a farm and have a bunch of kids. There's a scare when Crawley hits oil while plowing, but it turns out he's just punctured an oil pipeline.

Review - What a Way to Go!

I've heard it said that the more famous people that appear in a movie you've never heard of, the greater the chance the movie will be horrible. That saying may be referring to this movie. The actors all do fine, but the movie just isn't funny or interesting. It is extravagant, with a huge wardrobe budget for MacLaine and huge sets, but it all falls flat.
