Random Bird Photos from This Year So Far

On January 12, I found a Harlan’s Hawk at Fountain Creek.

I drove down to Lake Pueblo on February 9 to see a couple Trumpeter Swans that were hanging about. I found them, but they were too far for good photos. I also saw a Bewick’s Wren.

A Belted Kingfisher

Two Red-breasted Mergansers (my first for Colorado)

And two very tame Horned Grebes.

On May 11, I drove to southeastern Colorado and birded around Lamar. The ranges of some eastern birds sneak into the state down there. I saw my first Colorado Chimney Swift, Northern Cardinal, and Black-and-white Warbler. I also saw this Mississippi Kite.

On May 18, I birded in Cañon City.

Bullock’s Oriole

Evening Grosbeak. I see these in Cañon City quite often, in the cottonwoods along the Arkansas River. It always surprised me because I’ve always thought of them as birds of the far north.
