Review - Awful Truth, The

Lucy and Jerry decide to get a divorce when Jerry suspects (wrongly) that Lucy is having an affair with her music teacher. (They had spent a night stranded in a cabin after his car broke down.) Lucy meets Dan, an oil man from Oklahoma and gets engaged, but can’t marry him until the divorce is final. (It takes 90 days.) Jerry keeps showing up and embarrassing Lucy. By the time he’s finished, Dan calls the wedding off. But that’s OK with Lucy because she realizes she is still in love with Jerry.

But now Jerry has given up on Lucy and gets involved with Barbara, a society dame. As the finalization of the divorce approaches, Jerry and Barbara get engaged. Lucy goes to Barbara’s while Jerry is there and poses as Jerry’s sister. She puts on a show like she’s a drunk and somewhat sleazy, ending Jerry’s relationship with Barbara.

Jerry and Lucy leave together. Lucy deliberately runs her car into a ditch so they will have to hole up at her aunt’s cabin. The door between their two bedrooms won’t stay closed, and just as the final day of their marriage ends, they realize they want to stay married.

Not much of a plot. I don’t care much for Irene Dunne when she’s being serious, but she does comedy well.
