Review - Dirty Harry
I saw this often on TV in the years after it first came out, and, of course, I knew all the famous quotes. But after recently watching it again, I wasn't impressed much.
Callahan is a San Francisco homicide detective called in when a sniper calling himself Scorpio kills a girl in a swimming pool on a motel roof. The killer demands money and when the city doesn’t deliver, kills a young boy. Callahan is given a new partner, the inexperienced Chico. Scorpio next kidnaps a girl and demands a higher ransom. Callahan follows Scorpio’s instructions all over the city from phone booth to phone booth. When he finally meets up with the killer, he is beaten and about to be shot when Chico shows up. Scorpio is distracted and Callahan manages to knife him in the knee. Chico is shot in the arm, and Scorpio limps off. Later that evening, a hospital reports a stab wound. The doctor recognized Scorpio as a vendor at a nearby stadium. Callahan tracks him down and shoots him in the leg, then beats him until he tells where the girl is. The girl is found dead, but Scorpio is released because of the tactics Callahan used to get the information. Scorpio then kidnaps a busload of kids. The mayor wants to pay him off, but Callahan goes off by himself, jumps on the bus, then chases Scorpio down and kills him.
I saw this several times when I was a kid, but I think it was on TV because I don’t remember the nude scenes. There wasn’t much to the plot, and the lines by Eastwood that I used to think were so cool sounded rather stupid.
