Reviews for High Society
Review - High Society
Tracy Lord is marrying the pompus George Kittredge. Her next-door neighbor is her first husband, C.K. Dexter, a popular song writer. Tracy divorced him because he wasn’t high-class enough for her. Two reporters, Mike and Liz, from Spy magazine come to Newport to cover the high society wedding. During the day before the wedding, Dexter tells Tracy that he still loves her, and that she might appreciate him if she ever quit expecting other people to be perfect. She takes a ride with Mike and he tells her she’s sensational, but as a flesh-and-blood woman, not the icon George makes of her.
All this gets Tracy thinking and she doesn’t like the conclusion she’s coming to. At the party the night before the wedding, she gets drunk. George locks her in the parlor to get some sleep, but she climbs out a window and runs off with Mike for some innocent flirting. While all this is going on, Dexter is hanging around, hoping to ruin the wedding and re-marry Tracy. George comes looking for Tracy just as Mike carries her up from the pool, dripping wet.
The next morning, George comes over with his nose in the air. He says he’s not sure if he can still marry Tracy, but he supposes he can forgive her once. Tracy, realizing that she’s not perfect and therefore shouldn’t expect perfection in others, wants no part of George. She goes inform the guests that she won’t be getting married, but Dexter intervenes and she marries him again. Mike and Liz also get engaged.
• A remake of The Philidelphia Story. This was Grace Kelly’s last movie. She was about to marry Prince Ranier and in fact wore her engagement ring in the movie.
I liked it OK. I saw it with the Sperry the last time I was in Arkansas. It didn’t seem like any of the actors or actresses were really trying, but it was a light-hearted romp. The songs were pretty dull.
