Review - People Will Talk

Noah Praetorious is a woman’s doctor and professor at a university. Prof. Elwell is a sniveling little jerk who wants to get Noah fired.

Deborah Higgins is a student who comes to Noah for treatment. It turns out she is pregnant but unmarried. She doesn’t want to tell her father because she’s afraid of how he will take it. She attempts to commit suicide. Afraid that she will attempt suicide again, Noah tells her she’s not pregnant after all. Deborah is embarrassed about telling Noah about her lover, so she runs away. He travels to the farm where Deborah lives with her father and uncle, figuring to tell her father about her pregnancy. The father is a failure, living off the charity of his brother. The brother is a narrow-minded, stubborn bully. When Deborah confesses to Noah that she loves him, Noah suddenly asks her to marry him.

Two weeks later, Deborah finds out she’s pregnant. Noah tells her that the baby isn’t his, and she suspects that he married her out of pity. He convinces her that he really did fall in love and is still doing so.

Elwell brings Noah up on charges, but Noah stands up to him and defends himself. Elwell then attempts to discredit Noah on the basis that his friend Shunderson is a convicted murderer. Shunderson enters the room and tells his story. He did kill a man, but with justification. Noah is acquitted. Elwell is disgraced. All other live happily ever after.

A strange movie, dealing with pretty advanced themes for 1951. It would have been rather stuffy and dull except for the charm of Cary Grant.
