He soon collects a parcel of enemies, including Arleta (Ella Raines), a hot-tempered cowgirl who can't decide if she hates him or loves him. There's another woman in the picture, a sweet eastern girl who is the niece of the murdered man. There's smuggling, cheating at cards, murder, but somehow Rocklin navigates his way through the tangle with the help of the one man in town who likes him, the drunk stage driver Dave (Gabby Hayes). In the end, Rocklin clears up all the mess, discovers he's inherited a ranch and ends up with the cowgirl.

Review - Tall in the Saddle

Way more complicated than my summary. Villains and subplots overlap and begin and end with wild abandon. It's very silly, but it's so joyfully exuberant that it's rather fun. John Wayne is himself to the max and the other characters are having a riot too.
