Notes:What a delightful book! The story of children from an English family (two brothers and two sisters) on Summer holiday in the Lake District of England. Their father is off in China, or somewhere equally far-flung, with the Royal Navy and the book begins with his telegram giving the kids permission to take the family sailboat and camp out on the tiny island in the middle of the lake. They pretend to be pirates and explorers and have a series of wonderful adventures.

COMMENTS — This is the first in a series of 12 books that chronicle the adventures of the Swallows and Amazons.
