Notes:Subtitle: The Month that Saved America.

April, 1865 was a month that could have unraveled a nation. Instead, it saved it. It was not inevitable that the Civil War would end as it did. The nation could have been plunged back into war or a more violet peace. In that one month, the nation saw the fall of Richmond, plans for Confederate guerilla war, Lee's retreat and Appomattox, Lincoln's assassination and the ensuing fears, and collapsed negotiations and continued war in the south. But instead of chaos, the nation began its trek toward reconciliation. Winik writes history like thrilling prose.
