The History of George Washington

by Mason Locke Weems
Category: "U.S. History - Political"
Pages:288
Year of Publication:1806
Date Read:07/16/1994
Notes:Originally published as an eighty-page pamphlet entitled The Life and Memorable Actions of George Washington, it quickly attained immense popularity. In 1806 a so-called fifth edition was published which contained for the first time the tale of George Washington and the cherry tree; the book has survived to this day, although largely on the basis of that episode.

Review - History of George Washington, The

This book appears under various, but similar titles, but the author is the important part. In this book he created the myth of Washington and the cherry tree and greatly embelished several other events, thereby adding to the adoration of Washington that almost amounted to a cult in the early 1800s. It is for that historical context that it is on the list, but it's rather a dull book (in my opinion).
