Notes:Set in 1895, The Irish R. M. comically depicts the curious affection and mutual misunderstandings that develop between a transported Englishman and his Irish neighbors. Major Sinclair Yeates, retired, arrives in the west of Ireland to take up the position of R. M. (Resident Magistrate). He soon realizes that he must cope not only with a new job but also with a very diverse — and very Irish — collection of characters, including the formidable first lady of the country, the local Master of the Fox Hounds, and a lively young lady whose heart is always in the right place — but never where her mother would like it to be.

COMMENTS — E. Œ. Somerville and Martin Ross are the pseudonyms of Edith Anna Oenone Somerville and Violet Florence Martin, Irish cousins who collaborated on 14 books. After Violet died, Edith continued to use the joint pseudonyms, claiming she was still inspired by her cousin.
A collection of short stories originally published in three volumes between 1898 and 1915; now all published in one edition.

The adventures and misadventures of Major Sinclair Yeates, a resident magistrate in rural Ireland. Many of the stories are about fox hunting and other pursuits of the upper classes. All of them are clever, some of them are hilarious.
