Lewis wrote the series for his goddaughter, Lucy, who grew up faster than it the time it took to publish the books. I think by the time he got to this book he had given up writing them for Lucy and was trying to make them into a meaningful unit. This is all well and good, and they are all excellent books, but they were the most fun early in the series when he was having the most fun writing them.
