COMMENTS — The movie, starring Daniel Day Lewis and Madeline Stowe, is good, but not very faithful to the book. Many of the same things happen, but not in the same order and not to the same people. Read the book first. Last of the Mohicans is the second book in the five-volume Leather Stocking Tales. The others are: The Deerslayer; The Pathfinder; The Pioneers; and, The Prairie. (The five books weren’t published in the order of the storyline.)
My Rating: 8

Review - Last of the Mohicans, The

I first read this book when I was about 14 and understood about a quarter of it. I thought Cooper was the most obtuse, wordy writer ever and would have laughed if anyone suggested I read it again. But when I saw the movie, I was inspired. I still think Cooper is wordy, but I was able to get into his rhythm and was only occasionally lost. The mood of the book is excellent, the characters are likeable and well portrayed. (Most of the events in the book happened in the movie, but often to different characters and in a different order.)
