The book is considered a masterpiece for its depiction of warfare and of the psychological turmoil of a soldier.

COMMENTS — At the age of 22, when Crane wrote this book, he had never seen a battle. Later, he served as a war correspondent in many parts of the world. He died of tuberculosis before he was 30.
