The Teutonic Knights

by Henryk Sienkiewicz
List(s):"Carp 500"
Category: "Fiction - Historical"
Pages:786
Year of Publication:1900
Date Read:03/25/2001
Notes:In 1399, the Kingdom of Poland combined forces with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to try to break the power of the despotic Teutonic Knights. The hero, Zbyszko (rhymes with Nabisco) takes us breathlessly on a series of adventures that include, but are not limited to, swashbuckling swordfights, rescuing damsels in distress, escaping from the evil clutches of the Knights and falling in love with his childhood sweetheart. The events lead us up to the decisive and climatic Battle of Tannenburg in 1410.

COMMENTS — Henryk Sienkiewicz was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1905. His most famous work was Quo Vadis?, concerning Christianity in the time of Nero, but he considered The Teutonic Knights his best novel. He also wrote an excellent trilogy about Poland’s struggle for national existence: With Fire and Sword; The Deluge; and Fire in the Steppe.

Much better than Quo Vadis?, but the massive lists of Polish knights get a bit old.
