| Notes: | The first Hardy Boys novel. The detective brothers search for a criminal’s loot in an old mansion. COMMENTS — F. W. Dixon was the pseudonym used for the writers of the Stratemeyer Syndicate (which also published The Bobbsey Twins, Tom Swift and Nancy Drew). MacFarlane was the first (he wrote numbers 1-16), and best, of the Hardy Boy writers. Try to find an edition published before 1959. After that point, the syndicate changed the books dramatically, “modernizing,” and abridging them. Recently, they have been reissued in the original versions by Applewood Books. |
