A leisurely chronicle of a summer’s boating holiday on the Thames. Jerome’s embellishing touches come from intimate knowledge of the Thames, its long history and the mishaps that await all who venture upon it. He is aware of the infrangibility of cans when the can opener has been left behind, the ingenuity of an untended rope, the cunning of kettles and leaking kerosene.

COMMENTS — Jerome K. Jerome insisted years later than he could “hardly remember” writing Three Men in a Boat. “I remember only,” he wrote, “feeling very young and absurdly pleased with myself.” This book was the inspiration for much of Connie Willis’ To Say Nothing of the Dog, and Jerome K. Jerome makes an appearance in that book.

Review - Three Men in a Boat

The book gets better as soon as you relax and stop expecting it to go anywhere. The bits about the dead dog and the huge trout in the bar are my favorite parts.
