| Notes: | A chronicle of life at Rugby, an English boys’ boarding school. Tom is harassed by the school bully, Flashman, but overcomes his trials. During his school career, Tom does very well academically and on the playing fields. COMMENTS — This book inspired a sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford, and a series of racy historical novels based on the Flashman character, by George MacDonald Fraser. In the series, Flashman’s memoirs, the rake manages to somehow get involved in almost every major event around the world during the 19th-century. Always cowardly and self-centered, he somehow manages to come off as a hero. |
