Category: "Fiction - Historical"
Pages:1455
Year of Publication:1869
Date Read:09/15/1988
Notes:The histories of five aristocratic families portrayed against the vivid background of Russian social life during the war against Napoleon. The theme of war is subordinate to the story of family existence. The heroine, Natasha Rostova reaches her greatest fulfillment through her marriage to Pierre Bezuhov and her motherhood.

COMMENTS — Yes, it’s long. Very long. But it’s also very good. At the very end, Tolstoy does a bit of preaching on his theory of history — that there is a minimum of free choice; all is ruled by an inexorable historical determinism.
