| Notes: | A four-volume history. Volume I, THE BIRTH OF BRITAIN, tells of the invasions by Danes, Romans and Normans. It concludes in 1485 with the end of the War of the Roses and the founding of the Tudor dynasty. The second volume, THE NEW WORLD, tells of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Elizabeth I, the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the sailing of the Mayflower and settling of America, Cromwell and the Great Revolution. The book ends with the corrupt but colorful reign of Charles II. Volume III, THE AGE OF REVOLUTION, covers Marlborough, Napoleon, Nelson, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and the American and French Revolutions. Volume IV, THE GREAT DEMOCRACIES, begins in 1815 and covers events up to the turn of the century and the death of Queen Victoria. Churchill's last great work, an intensely personal view of history: "Things in history that interested me." was Clement Attlee's humorous alternate title. |
