Notes:It's far in the future. A race of machines — Tripods — have taken over the earth. They make people slaves by implanting a metal cap on their heads when they turn 14. Will's capping day is coming, but he decides he doesn't want to be a slave. He runs away, heading for the White Mountains where a small band of men are resisting the Tripods. He's joined by his cousin, Henry, and Jean-Paul, whom they meet along the way. But the Tripods are hot on their trail ... This is the first book in the Tripods trilogy. The others are THE CITY OF GOLD AND LEAD and THE POOL OF FIRE. Christopher also wrote a prequel, WHEN THE TRIPODS CAME.

Review - White Mountains, The

I found this science-fiction adventure when looking through lists of recommended books for kids to find works for the Kids Carp list. The setting — a future where man has been reduced to living as he did centuries ago amidst the ruins of a more advanced civilization — is intriguing. The characters, the three boys in particular, are pretty well drawn and realistic. The adventure, while a bit inconsistent, kept my attention well enough to make me want to read the next book. I would have absolutely loved this book when I was 12.
