Missouri girl Adair Colley is imprisoned by Union soldiers because her brother is a Confederate. She meets Major Will Neumann. He is transferred but helps her escape first. She makes her way alone back to her home. Will is injured and comes looking for her. The books ends as they meet — her with consumption, him with a gangrenous hand, both with no money — but together.
