Notes:A scientifically balanced, efficiently controlled state that allows for no personal emotions or individual responses; art and beauty are considered disruptive and “mother” and “father” are forbidden terms. Into this world is introduced John the Savage, who was abandoned with his mother in a primitive outpost. When his mother dies of an overdose of the feel-good drug, John revolts.

COMMENTS — Aldous' grandfather was Thomas Henry Huxley, a biologist who helped Charles Darwin develop the theory of evolution. In the 1950s Huxley became famous for his interest in psychedelic or mind-expanding drugs like mescaline and LSD, which he apparently took many times over the years.
