Notes:History of the Presidential election of 1876. Samuel J. Tilden defeated Rutherford B. Hayes in the popular vote and probably in the electoral vote too, but through political deals and tricks, a deal was worked out that gave Hayes the Presidency in exchange for removing the army from the southern states and giving the Democrats free reign to suppress the Black vote.

Review - Fraud of the Century

Informative and thorough, but a bit dry in places because of the very large number of characters. Morris makes it clear that he thinks Hayes and the Republicans stole the election, although the Democrats did intimidate Blacks to keep them away from the polls. The Republican tricks were certainly easier to prove.
