Notes:In 1857, the steamship Central America sank in a hurricane off the coast of North Carolina. It carried with it to the bottom, 8,000 feet down, appoximately 18,000 tons of gold coins and bars gathered during the California Gold Rush. In 1988, Ohio engineer, Tommy Thompson found the ship and recovered the gold using an unmanned vehicle designed especially for the job — a job unlike any that had ever been done or even imagined.

Review - Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea

In 1857, the steamship Central America sank in a hurricane off the coast of North Carolina carrying approx. 18,000 tons of gold from the California Gold Rush. In 1988, Ohio engineer Tommy Thompson recovered the gold using an unmanned vehicle he designed especially for the job.

The chapters of the book detailing the history of the Gold Rush and the shipwreck were great. The chapters detailing Tommy Thompson's life were pretty dull. It got a bit better when it got to the actual recovery of the gold, but it still took a long time to get to the point. But still, if you like this sort of book and can read fast over the dull parts, it's a pretty good read.
