| Notes: | Catch-22 is set during World War II. Yossarian, a B-25 bombardier flying missions out of a very unusual base in Italy, wants the doctor to ground him for insanity. Will he get himself out of the sky before he’s killed? This funny story, with its wacky cast of characters, captures the absurdity and grim humor of war. COMMENTS — The catch-22 occurs in the course of a psychiatric examination and renders invalid all the questions that have gone before. Yossarian tries to convince the shrink that he is mentally unfit for service and should be given a discharge. But catch-22 is that if he is intelligent enough to know that he is crazy, he is fit enough for continued service, since it’s all insane anyway. |
