Dortmunder and gang are hired to steal a painting and return it — after the insurance has been paid. But they misplace it and have to buy a fake. The original shows up in London, but before they can grab it, it is replaced by a second fake. All involved get arrested except Dortmunder and a colleague who are stranded in rural Scotland without the painting or money.
