| Notes: | In the final weeks of the Civil War, Inman, a wounded Confederate veteran, decides to return home to his beloved, Ada, who is waiting for him at her farm deep in the Carolina mountains. Like Odysseus, Inman has his share of run-ins with hostile strangers. Meanwhile, Ada, like Penelope, is learning to handle loss and loneliness and is making an inner journey of her own. COMMENTS — Cold Mountain won the National Book Award. It is said to be based on Homer’s Odyssey. |
