Review - A Treasury of the Familiar

Why I read the book: I bought all three books in the series back when I was doing a weekly poem for the Carp web site. I started reading it at bedtime, then gave up. About three months ago, I decided to finish the first one, anyway, and I finally sat down and completed the final 40 pages today.

What the book was about: Famous and familiar speeches, passages of Scripture, saying, excerpts from books, songs, but mostly poems.

What I liked about the book: I often found myself reading a poem or other work that I thought I’d never heard of when I suddenly came upon a line or two that I’d heard a hundred times. I’d say, “Oh, so that’s where that’s from!” Some of the pieces were good.

What I didn’t like about the book: The mix was strange, with no connection between consecutive pieces. One page had Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem for children, The Swing followed by Revelation 20:11-15 on the Great White Throne Judgment. And naturally, some of the poetry didn’t do anything for me.
