Review - Invention of Hugo Cabret
A very fast read, with some neat mood-setting and an mildly amusing plot, but in the end forgettable.

| Notes: | Recommended in World Magazine. Hugo is a 12-year-old boy who lives in a shuttered room in the Paris train station. His uncle kept the clocks running, but after his uncle died, Hugo stayed on, although nobody knows about him. When he can, he works on a mechanical man that he found the ruins of the museum where his father died in a fire. He steals parts from a toy store owned by George Melies. When Melies catches Hugo, he forces him to work in the shop to pay back what he stole. Hugo makes friends with Isabelle, Melies adopted daughter. Together with Etienne, a young man who works at a nearby theater, they discover that Melies was a pioneer of early films who had become disillusioned by life and quit his work. By the end of the story, Hugo is living with Melies who has taken up his film career again. The book contains many passages where the story is advanced by pictures only. |
