Notes:Lincoln Bradway rode into South Pass, Wyoming, seeking to find the persons responsible for the death of his "pard," Jimmy Weston. He soon discovers that the entire region is spellbound by the beautiful Kit Brandon, the "Maverick Queen." Rumor has it that Kit heads a huge cattle rustling operation, and the ranchers in the valley are out to get her. Kit sets her sights on Linc, but fails in her pursuit because he falls for (and almost immediately secretly marries) her niece, Lucy. When the dust settles, there are several bodies needing burial, among them Kit's.

Review - Maverick Queen, The

I had only read one Zane Grey novel, his famous Riders of the Purple Sage and found it tremendously poorly-written. Yet I knew Grey was one of the most popular writers of the early 1900s. I thought I'd give him another chance.

As with the earlier book, the plot had potential. But Grey's awful writing and ridiculous characters ruined the book. Here's an example: He remembered that one of his cowboy gifts, which had stood him in good stead many a time, was the power to disguise his voice.

Huh? Cowboy gift? Can all cowboys do this?

Anyway, I enjoy an occasional Western, but not those written by Zane Grey.
