In 1565, nearly 50,000 Turks attacked approx. 500 Knights of St. John (who with their allies and native Maltese had a force of perhaps 7,000) in a summer-long siege of three forts on Malta. The Turks lost almost 40,000 and only took one fort before being driven off by a relief force. |
