Reviews for Galena's DeSoto House

Review - Galena's DeSoto House

Another booklet I picked up in the lobby of the bed and breakfast outside Galena. We were looking for presidential sites, and both Grant and Lincoln visited this hotel, so I was interested to read its history. Basically, it’s been visited by a bunch of famous people (Lincoln, Grant, Charles Sumner, Dorthea Dix, Jenny Lind, Tom Thumb, Robert G. Ingersoll, Stephen A. Douglas, William Jenning Bryan, Franz Sigel, George B. McClellan, John A Logan, John Otherday, Thomas Francis Meager, Benjamin Prentis) but hasn’t been a success since it was built. The top two floors were removed shortly after it was built and it’s gone bankrupt several times. It is currently fixed up fancy, but we’ll see how long it lasts.
