Sharpe takes his company behind French lines on Wellington's orders to steal gold from Spanish partisans. He is chased by partisan leader, El Catolico (whose girl, Teresa, he steals and falls for) and the French. With the help of Prussian cavaly, he holes up in Almeida, the huge fortress besieged by the French. Sharpe blows up the fort and escapes with the gold and his company back to Wellington. Teresa becomes a partisan leader after Sharpe kills El Catolico.
