Sharpe is demoted to Lieutenant, but manages to lead his old company into the breech in the fortress. He and Harper are just in time to stop the evil Sgt. Hakeswill from raping Teresa (Sharpe's lover) and killing their child, Antonia (the two were in the fortress town with Teresa's uncle). The British sack the city. Sharpe gets his company back for good, but Hakeswill (who constantly escapes death) escapes.
