Notes:In Portsmouth, by the fireside of Will Tunns’ Cheerful Tortoise taproom, British seamen quaff pints and regale themselves with tales of grapeshot and gales. Enter the one-legged Royal Navy surgeon, Doctor F. Dogbody, raconteur extraordinaire. In each of the ten stories collected here, the good doctor recounts the loss of his “larboard” leg, and each story is more outrageous and hilarious than the last. Weaving rich historical detail into his fantastical tapestry, Dogbody encounters such real-life personages as Horatio Nelson, Thomas Cochrane, Benjamin Franklin and Catherine the Great of Russia.

COMMENTS — Doctor Dogbody’s Leg has recently been republished as part of the Heart of Oak Sea Classics series. James Norman Hall is also the co-author with Charles Nordhoff of the Mutiny on the Bounty trilogy.

Review - Doctor Dogbody's Leg

In each chapter, Dr. Dogbody, an old naval surgeon from the Napoleonic Wars, tells the story of how he lost his leg. But each time, the story is different. Clever and funny. I loved the way his friends played along, urging him to tell the story yet again.
