Review - Night Fall

John Doyle’s wife, Kate worked on the team investigating the downing of TWA flight 800 in July, 1996, but she’s not happy with the conclusion. When the FBI and CIA make a point of telling Doyle not to open the case, of course he does. He tracks down two witnesses who were taping themselves having sex on the beach during an illicit affair when the plane blew up in the background. The lady, Jill Winslow, saved a copy of the tape which clearly shows a missile heading for and hitting the aircraft. With the FBI hot on his heals, Doyle grabs Jill and hides in NYC, waiting for a showdown with the major people to reveal what he’s found. He schedules it to take place in a restaurant in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and arrives just as the plane hits the tower. All the bad guys were conveniently up in the tower and died.

A silly book. There was no plausible reason given why the FBI would cover up clear evidence of a terrorist attack on the plane (which, in real life did blow up). The ending at the WTC was a little too cute, and the choice of the WTC as the place for the dramatic showdown was contrived as all get out. Add to all this the fact that nothing much happened in the book except for descriptions of the sex on the beach and Corey’s fight with some guy who used to date Kate but was supposedly dead for several years when he suddenly reappeared (without explanation).
