| Notes: | The calm, respectable Dr. Jekyll develops a potion that will allow him to separate his good and evil aspects for scientific study. At first Jekyll has no difficulty abandoning the drug-induced persona of the repulsive Mr. Hyde, but as the experiments continue the evil personality wrests control from Jekyll and commits murder. COMMENTS — Stevenson went to bed one night brooding over his ill health. He awoke in extreme agitation and began to write furiously, completing the first draft of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in six days. During this week, Stevenson remained locked in his study, denying access even to his wife and son. In a passage in the book, Jekyll, no longer able to control Hyde, remains locked in his study and refuses admission to servants and friends. |
