| Notes: | Charles Smithson is engaged to Ernestina Freeman, but is seduced by Sarah Woodruff, a mysterious woman with a rumored dark past, who haunts his thoughts until he sleeps with her. He dumps Ernestina, but Sarah has disappeared. He searches, then travels in dispair, finally finding her in an artist's colony. Alternative endings have her revealing their daughter and all living happily — or: offering herself as his mistress only which causes him to leave, sad but stronger and wiser. |
