| Notes: | At birth, Ella is inadvertently cursed by an imprudent fairy named Lucinda, who bestows on her the "gift" of obedience. Anything anyone tells her to do, Ella must obey. Another girl might have been cowed by this affliction, but not feisty Ella: When her beloved mother dies, leaving her in the care of a mostly absent and avaricious father, and later, a loathsome stepmother and two treacherous stepsisters, Ella's life and well-being seem in grave peril. COMMENTS — Ella Enchanted was a Newbery Honor book. Levine has also written a series of short retellings of classic fairy tales, including: The Fairy’s Mistake and The Princess Test. |
