Review - You Live Once
Clint Sewell’s boss, Dodd Raymond, is having an affair with Mary Olan. To hide it from his wife, he has Clint pretend to date Mary. The morning after a party, Clint finds Mary’s strangled body in his closet. He panics and dumps the body in the woods. He gets away with it for a while, but then strings from Mary’s clothing are found in his trunk. Clint hides out with the only person he can trust, his secretary, Toni MacRae. While there, Clint and Toni confess their love for each other.
A private detective tracks Clint to Toni’s. Clint flees, but is surrounded and surrenders. He is roughed up by the cops and expects to be tried for murder when Dodd’s body is found hanging from a tree, an apparent suicide. Clint is released, but he’s not satisfied that the case makes sense. He does some research and finds evidence pointing to Mary Olan’s uncle, Willy Pryor. He confronts Willy and is in danger of being killed himself when the detective shows up again and subdues Pryor who confesses. Clint is given a promotion and marries Toni.
Typical MacDonald fare. I didn’t care much for Clint because he whines too much and loses every fight he gets into. I did like Toni, although she was a minor character, and I’m not sure what she saw in Clint. But it’s fiction.
