Review - Draw: The Greatest Gunfights of the American West
Why I read the book: I picked it up at Border’s not long ago when I was in the mood to buy a book.
What the book was about: Short histories of 31 gunfights that took place west of the Mississippi between 1850 or so and 1920. These include bank robberies, personal duels, posses chasing criminals, etc.
What I liked about the book: It kept my interest. It wasn’t thrilling, but it kept my interest.
What I didn’t like about the book: Nothing really. It was what it was.
The most interesting quote: A lot of western clichés that were unintentionally funny.
• He turned around, saying that he would dab a loop on a likely looking mount they had passed in a field a ways back.
• They were putting distance between themselves and the scene of the train holdup, and the smart thing to do would have been to leave the horses alone and keep dusting along the trail.
• Several shots were fired before the gang abandoned the stolen horses and took off for the tall and uncut.
• The next morning, the star-packers started into town, hoping to catch some or all of the Doolin gang there.
• He was arrested by police for selling whiskey when he claimed he was just holding a suitcase belonging to someone else; the suitcase had two bottles of Who-hit-John in it.
• A few minutes later, the rancher, still quaking in horror, was freed from the log and ordered to light a shuck out of this part of the country.
• Two more corpse-and-cartridge sessions added to more dead men to his tally.
• Powell went from the hoosegow to one of Wichita’s saloons and started varnishing his tonsils with bottled courage.
• Toyah was a favorite watering hole of the punchers, so naturally, gamblers, soiled doves, and all the other typical denizens of the Old West congregated there too.
Recommendation: I gave it a 7. Not bad if you’re in the mood for this sort of thing.
