Review - Paul: His Apostleship and Message

What the book was about: Stam presents a very clear study of what Paul’s ministry was and how it differed from the ministry of the other apostles. Until Paul, salvation was offered through God’s chosen nation of Israel. When Jesus Christ came to earth, Israel rejected Him and crucified Him. Jesus appealed to His Father on the cross to forgive them. This resulted in an extension of the offer of the kingdom. But this extended offer was rejected, culminating in the stoning of Stephen. So God called a new apostle with a new message — a mystery that had never been revealed — that Israel was set aside for a time and salvation was now offered to both Jews and Gentiles.

What I liked about the book: Stam uses a lot of Scripture in presenting his points — letting Paul speak for himself.

What I didn’t like about the book: Nothing, really, although I was hoping for a more systematic approach to Paul’s entire life and ministry.

One of many interesting quotes:
• Paul could boast in the accomplishments of Calvary. He could boast — and so can we — that God has dealt righteously with our sins; that salvation is based upon the solid foundation of a penalty paid, so that no one in heaven will be able to say to us, “What! You here! How did you make it?” We will all know how we got there and will rejoice forever in the blessed Savior who bore all the guilt and punishment due us that we might be justified by His grace.

Recommendation: I gave it a 9 because I wanted a more comprehensive study of Paul’s life, but it was excellent.

Further Comments: Don’t read it if you’re not ready to be seriously challenged, or if you’re not willing to be convinced that the Bible presents a dispensational rather than covenant theology.
